Sink or Swim

Sink or swim?

A choice I,

And I alone,

Must make.

Treading water

Tires the more

I delay.

Clouds of confusion

Hover and rain

Down their tears

Upon these

Restless waters

That drown

My spirit.

A dry, distant horizon

Hints at light and

Beckons, and still

I delay.

Oops … there’s a shark.

This is my response to Kellie Elmore’s Free Write Friday challenge for this week.

This was fun … πŸ˜‰

  1. aloha Dorothy. i like these words:

    “Treading water

    Tires the more

    I delay.”

because in the statement there is no judgement and what is delayed is left to the reader to take in their own way. that to me leaves a lot of area to wonder around in and think about. (a good thing imo). aloha.

    1. Thank you. I hadn’t thought about it that way but you are quite right ~ there are several ways in which this could be interpreted. I’ll it up to your imagination. πŸ˜‰ Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Aloha! πŸ™‚

  2. The glint of hope in this is wonderful, even in the midst of darkness, there is always a light burning for us to find it. And sharks to keep up on our toes πŸ˜‰ Love this.

  3. Just love your use of metaphors here and it can linger into a dark state but the Shark attack sort of shocked me out of that to get into a fight or flight mode. Very very good…I love this poem!!

    1. Thank you. πŸ™‚ … In this case the shark was a really pleasant surprise. Had no idea he’d make an appearance. But isn’t that what’s wonderful about free writing? You never know what will happen next. πŸ˜‰
