The irresistible siren song of horses called to me from an early age, and they’ve been my teachers, friends, and guides ever since.
Still, it wasn’t until my early 40s that I had the privilege to become the primary steward of one of these magnificent beings. From almost out of the blue trotted this handsome 16.3 hand, dark bay, four-year-old, Hanoverian gelding bearing the name Shakespeare. I can recall marvelling at this wonderful turn of events especially as I was, at the time, embarking on a new chapter as a creative writer. Our confluence felt like kismet.
In the ensuing years Shakespeare, aka Bear, inspired me to write verse in its many forms until one day these sonnets were born. Sonnets from Poet’s Paddock: An Anthology inspired by Shakespeare, a poet outstanding in his field is a reflective collection offering an escape from the human mundane into the realm of equine quietude. They’re a record of Shakespeare’s musings as transcribed by me, his scribe. At their essence, these lovingly prepared sonnets offer a gentle reminder to engage thoughtfully with the day-to-day while maintaining a tender heart and open mind.
Contains 24 sonnets, plus one bonus sonnet inspired after Shakespeare’s sudden and tragic passing on November 21, 2017, at the age of 16.
